Steamboat Springs
Steamboat Springs in northwest Colorado is another beautiful Colorado mountain resort with high likelihood of fresh powder (snow) and many lifts and trails to choose from. There are entire sections of the mountains that are not for Orange Triangles skiers but there is one large area to play in and also experience simple moguls, easy jumps, and some slightly steeper sections to safely test yourself.
Tomahawk Face to Quickdraw – Quickdraw is easily the most fun Orange Triangle trail on the mountain. But the beginning of it is very steep. We suggest getting to the good parts by going right from the top of the Sunshine of Sundown lifts initially following the green Sundial. Then make a right down Tomahawk Face. Stay on the left side which is less steep and then cut across the trail to the connector to Quickdraw on the right. Keep an eye uphill for faster skiers. Then enjoy the long, wide, and very fun Quickdraw all the way to the bottom!
Cub and Ramrod – There are 4 small blues that go right off of the green Tomahawk and connect down to Quickdraw. Cub is an ungroomed Orange Triangle with possible some small bumps (moguls) and the occasional evergreen poking through, but it is wide and not very steep. It’s a great place to try the quick turns needed in bumps without a crowd of people around and without any dangerous declines. Ramrod is somewhat the same but much longer and more adventurous. (Pup and Buckshot are both steeper, and with the two being ungroomed blues they attract more advanced skiers which make the bumps even more pronounced. Maybe leave those until your last day on the mountain.)
Lower sections of Sunshine Lift Line and Flintlock – Most of these two trails are perfect Orange Triangle trails, but the very beginnings come off of the steep High Noon to the left of the top of the Sunshine Express lift. Instead, pick these two trails up by cutting through the green Rendezvous from Quickdraw or Tomahawk.
Traverse and Highline – Unfortunately there is no “Orange” way to get off these trails but we wanted to include them on the list so you have an opportunity to see off the ridgeline in these two sections. Highline ends near the top of HighNoon which is steep, but it’s also very wide. An adventurous Orange Triangle skier might be able to pick a line across the face of High Noon and then down into Quickdraw but I found it to be steep and crowded.
Baby Powder – Mixed reviews here on if this is even worth the detail off of the very fun green Tomahawk, but it’s another short, ungroomed trail with some bumps in the early section. After that it’s a little flat and a little icy but potentially a nice scenery change if you’ve ridden Tomahawk enough times.
Rowel – is a short cut-through on the green Spur Run. It’s an Orange Triangle because it is wide and just steep enough to use as an early-ride test of your Orange Triangle skills to try something a bit steeper than your usual greens.
Main Drag – This Orange Triangle is narrow and tree lined so make sure you are confident in your quick speed reductions. A lot of experience skiers use this to get to the bottom Bashor or Thunderhead and avoid the greens, so it’s not tops on our list but it’s a nice change of pace and an additional option for the lower mountains.
Moonlight – This Orange Triangle was a little icy through the middle when we were there, but with a normal season’s amount of powder it should be a quick, fun ride from the top of the Elkhead or Burgess lifts to the bottom of Sundown. Enter Moonlight from Velvet and avoid the steeper entrance on Skyline.
